Basically I purchased a set of cheap wood spade bits and used them to make holes in a slab then marked the spade sizes next to the holes. After the slabs were fired to maturity I could test corks etc to see which spade I needed to use create a hole for the product I wanted to insert. It is approximate and separate gauges are needed for different clays. Hope this helps!
